We believe the best way to learn a language is through the lives of real people.

Textbook dialogues are quickly forgotten. But a story about a young man who ran across a country on one leg, or a woman who planted millions of trees, stays with you. And when a story stays with you, so does the English.

That's the idea behind Bright Lives English. Every week we tell a short, true story about someone who did something brave, kind or surprising, and we turn it into a complete English lesson:

• A video you can slow down, and replay one sentence at a time.
• A transcript that follows the video, with the key words explained.
• Flashcards to learn and remember the most useful words.
• The Story Challenge, a quick game to check what you understood.

Everything is free, and you don't need an account. Your progress is saved on your own device.

Who we are

We're two English teachers, a husband and wife, and teaching is what we love most. In our classrooms we've always tried to do one thing: keep every lesson positive and bright. Bright Lives English is how we bring that feeling to learners everywhere, for free.

We believe English matters more than ever. Ideas and information now move around the world in seconds, and English opens the door to so much of it. Everyone deserves a way in, whatever their budget.

The idea for our lessons came from something we've always enjoyed: reading about remarkable people and what we can learn from them. Their stories have one thing in common. Nothing comes easy. Every one of them kept going when things were hard.

Learning English is not so different. It isn't easy for everyone, but it is rewarding for everyone.

So every story on this site carries two lessons: the English you need, and the reminder that you can get there, one step at a time.
